Someday in November 2011, I received an e-mail from my previous web host WebGo24 to the effect that, due to increasing visitor numbers, my blog was firing too many processes, generating too much server load and affecting other customers. I couldn’t quite believe it, because my visitor statistics had been showing good, but not quite extreme values for months. So I checked with my host.

I was told that more than 1000 visitors per day were “unfortunately, too much on a shared hosting account” and that “an own server is getting necessary”. I was a little confused, since 1000 visitors a day aren’t actually that much!? There are blogs that are a zillion times more successful than mine, and they’re not all running on their own servers either. But my provider insisted that shared hosting was not an option for me, even if I upgraded to a higher package. A dedicated or virtual server was the only option!

The problem is: I don’t know much about servers. I only have very basic knowledge of Unix, and frankly I simply don’t want to spend hours and days on the setup. And most certainly I don’t want to be responsible for security and backups. That should be done by people who know what they’re doing.

I wrote another 2-3 e-mails to WebGo24 hoping to find an internal solution, but they adamantly insisted that, for 1000 visitors per day, you need your own server … And then I was even accused in a roundabout way that I was not willing to pay more money for more power – although I had explained minutely that not money, but my lack of knowledge was the reason I didn’t want a server!

domain*go

This comment was the last little push I had needed to make me register with another provider. Ginchen’s Blog is now being hosted at domain*go. Let’s see if I will again get e-mails and blockings, or if – according to my expectations – my page won’t cause any problems there, because 1000 visitors are a perfectly normal value! ;)

Anyway, I’m glad that I can finally write a little again. Unfortunately, the photo diary is now lacking two full months due to the break. I hope that I’ll still get all the photos together subsequently … For 2012, I shall certainly not keep such a diary anymore – it became too “strenuous” sometimes being forced to find a fitting image for every single day. Maybe I’ll do a stripped down version, sort of a highlight album. We shall see. ;)

My website has been offline for about two months now.
